Derek McMinn has done over 6000 total hip surgeries and over 3,500 MoM Hip Resurfacings. His 10 year survivorship for the BHR (Birmingham Hip Resurfacing) in a series of 3095 performed up until December 2009 is 97% from all patients. His first metal/metal resurfacing prototype was implanted in 1991, and the current design, the first BHR was implanted in July 1997 and has not changed in any way since then.

In Part Two Dr. Harlan Amstutz from the Joint Replacement Institute in Los Angeles, California continues with addressing the concerns about metal on metal implants, how long ago he implanted the first hip resurfacing device back in 1973, the revolution of hip resurfacing and the different materials used. He goes on to discuss patient selection, gender, longevity. His belief that Hip Resurfacing will be the first and main option offered in the future, over a Total Hip Replacement in all situations, the importance of patient follow up. How although he has been doing hip resurfacing longer than any other surgeon, he feels that he is still learning and progress is still being made. Importance of surgeon experience. Tony Nargol, M.D. from the U.K. discusses the concerns regarding metal on metal implants and Pseudo tumors. He also discusses the alert brought out by the MHRA which is an Agency in the U.K. similar to the FDA in the U.S. And he talks about the importance of choosing a component for hip resurfacing to avoid issues.
