Update March 16, 2011 (posted on our patiet support group )

Hi all

Some of you may remember my posts from a few years ago, I had my left hip
resurfaced in 1991 by the wonderful Mr McMinn. I had a check up at the ROH in
B'ham earlier this month (I have them every 2 years) and it all still looks
great.

My 17 & 12 year old boys are still not suffering any ill affects from metal ions
during pregancy so I think it's fair to say that made no difference.

I will post again on my left hips 20th birthday in September :-)

Take care

Katie

Update September 27, 2010

By way of a quick update, my hip is now 19 (a few days ago!) and my boys are 17 and 12 years. My eldest has just completed his GCSE exams and attained predominantly A* and A grades so clearly the metal ions don’t affect mental ability!! I am still strutting around in 4 inch heels without pain so all is good!!

Best regards,

Katie

Hi to all. I thought I would share some good news, I had acheck up last week at the Birmingham Royal orthopaedic hospital (I have them every 2 years)and
apparently my hip still looks as good as new 17.5 years after the wonderful Mr
McMinn resurfaced it in 1991!!

It is the best thing I have ever done, apart from having 2 fabulous, clever
children - both born post op ;-)

Hopefully my next update in 2 years, which will be the 20th year of my hip, will be a good one.

Take care.

Hi toeveryone. I haven't posted on this site for a long time but I
had a check up today at the Royal Orthopaedic in Birmingham after 15.5
years of having had my resurfacing and thought I would post an
update. My check up went very well and it looks like my hip is still
going very strong. The xray showed no change since my last check up 2
years ago which I was really pleased to hear. For anyone who hasn't
read my posts before, My kids were born 2 yrs & 7 years post op and
are now 13 & 8, they are very fit & well with absolutely no signs of
any ill affects from metal ions that may or may not have passed across
to them during pregnancy. I am not a gym bunny and don't do any
extreme sports, instead I keep fit by walking (especially walking
around shops looking for shoes - I must do a ten mile hike doing that
on a saturday afternoon!!)

I am pleased to report that I had another successful check up at the
ROH with Mr Treacy on Wednesday last week (although I didn't get to
see the man himself but one of his team). It was the first check up
in 2 years and my xray showed that my hip was just as good as it was
the last time. bizarrely for about 2 weeks before I have a check up
I start limping without reaslising it, my husband is convinced it is
psychological as I stop as soon as I have had the check up!! It is
now 13.5 years and I still feel very blessed, my next check up is in
March 07 and I am hoping for the same result when I go then!

13th Aniversary

I don't post to the group very often but thought that as today was a
bit special that I needed to say something. 13 years ago today Mr
McMinn resurfaced my left hip and I am still pain free and living a
happy and active life. I truly hope that all of you who have taken
the plunge and had a resurface enjoy the same. It changed my life by
giving me back my independence and joy of life, especially as it is
too short to be suffering in pain!! I have my next check up (with Mr
Treacy) in February so I'll let you know how things are going then.
In the meantime I shall continue reading your posts with interest and
will chip in when there is a subject on which I can offer help.

I had CDH (left side) which went undiagnosed until I was 4 - likeyouI had a few operations over the years to try and correct this. I hadmy resurfacing done in Birminghamby McMinn in 1991 aged 21. As my
hip was in a bit of a mess after all the operations I needed bonegrafting so the recovery was longer than normal resurfaces. It wouldbe well worth asking your consultant about it.

New tothis group

I discovered this group just a couple of days ago and am totallyamased at how many people are having/had or need resurfacing ops andhow much support is offered by fellow patients. I thought I'd sharemy experience as I am an old surface-hippy, not in age but in thenumber of years post op. I had mine done by Mr McMinn at the ROH inBirmingham whenthe procedure was a twinkle in most peoples eyes. Ihad CDH which was only diagnosed at 4yrs so I had many ops to tryto 'build' a hip socket but it finally gave up the ghost and I wasfaced with either a non tried and tested new op or a THR. I didn'tthink there was much choice!! I had my left hip resurfaced inSeptember 1991 when I was 21 - Mr McMinn was still pioneering it andI was the youngest person to have it at that time. I had to havebone grafting at the same time so my post op recovery took longerthan normal. I was in traction for 4 weeks & crutches for a fewmonths but it meant I could walk down the isle in 1992 with no hintof a limp which made my Mum cry! 2 years later I had my first babyfollowed by another one 5 years after that. My hip is still goingvery strong after over 12 years.

I would encourage anyone who is worried about the longevity of thisprocedure not to worry and go for it!

I am Katiewho Morag mentioned as having my kids after the op. I was21 when I had the resurfacing so similar to your age now. My firstbaby was 2 years post op and the 2nd was 7 years. Both of them arejust fine, I had normal pregnancies and they were born perfectlynormally, weighing in at a very healthy 8lb 7oz & 9lb respectively(sorry I can only do baby weights in english imperial measures!!).They are now coming up for 12years and 7years and none of us haveshown any signs of issues from metal ions.

As Morag says, had I not had this surgery I would not have consideredgetting pregnant as I dread to think of the pain it would havecaused.

I really hope you do proceed with a resurfacing, its coming up for 14years since mine was done and I have absolutely no regrets.
