Ceramic BMHR

My name is Rosemary Gretton and I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. On July 26, 2011, I underwent surgery for a BMHR (Birmingham Mid Head Resectioning) on my right hip, performed by Derek McMinn at the BMI Edgbaston Hospital in Birmingham, UK. I am now just over three months post-op and recovery has gone well. I was in hospital for 6 days, and stayed on in the UK for two weeks following surgery. I was using elbow crutches and then a cane, but am now walking on my own. I started swimming at six weeks, and have also taken up cycling again, as well as carrying on with physical therapy exercises recommended by the McMinn Centre.

My right hip had been giving me trouble for several years, gradually curtailing activities I used to enjoy, like running and hiking, cycling, skiing. X-rays revealed mild hip dysplasia and osteoarthritis. I underwent hip arthroscopy in 2010, without any noticeable improvement. The pain from the osteoarthritis was so bad that simple things like getting out of a chair or in and out of the car had become an effort. I could only walk a few blocks before the pain took over. I knew it was time to do something. And then I found out about hipresurfacingsite.com. I made contact with Vicky Marlow, and we talked through my options It turned out that going overseas to have hip surgery was more common than I thought. I found out that Mr. McMinn, who invented the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing, was taking US insurance. And I have family in the UK. WIth Vicky's help, I made contact with the McMinn Centre in June. Based on my situation, including a sensitivity to metal, the surgical team determined that a BHMR using ceramic on metal would be the best option for me.  And a few weeks after my first conversation with Vicky I was on a plane for the UK.

I'm happy with my decision to have the BMHR and am looking forward to getting back to the a more active lifestyle again.
