I just wanted to pass on my experience with my hip resurfacing surgery at the 8 week mark post op. First, a little history.

I am a 54 year old male in excellent health and physical condition. I was very active and athletic throughout my life and thanks to the anterior resurfacing procedure I am getting back in the game. Actually, I feel like I have my life back. I owe this to Dr. Stefan Kreuzer of Memorial Bone and Joint in Houston, Texas, who was the 4th orthopedic surgeon I had seen in a period of 5 years.

I always remembered the “shoes with the bar” that I wore to bed as a kid. I had no idea why I had to wear them, what I did know is that as soon as my parents went to bed, I would untie them and take them off. I grew up remembering the shoes, but with no real health issues, I didn’t ask questions as to why I wore them. As a kid I could never sit “criss cross applesauce”, but I had agility and strength abound – so I left the shoes behind me as a distant memory, never to be brought up again.

Diagnosed and Treated for Dysplasia as a Toddler
In 1968, when I was two years old, I was diagnosed as having dysplasia of the left hip (also known as congenital hip dislocation). The joint had not developed properly and the femur was dislocated. I walked with a limp. My parents took me to a leading orthopedic surgeon at the University of Chicago Medical Hospitals.  The doctor originally planned to put me in traction for about a week, after which he would perform open surgery to place the femur in an abducted position, and then cast it in plaster. He expected I would be in a series of body casts for two years, changed every six months.

Hi Vicky!

Was really glad to get your e-mail... I know you!!!! Remember the first time you posted on SH... remember how you step by step went to your goal... researching all possible ways... remember how you created your spreadsheet... with all expenses... and was ready to share with every one wanted it... remember thinking how it would be helpful if I had your spreadsheet when I had to make a decision... I was very happy happy for you when you started posted after your surgery...  I admire and respect you for what you have been doing in SH and how you are doing it , how generously you sharing your knowledge, time, soul with all in need... You might remember I once called you and asked to say 'hi' to Koen when he was in SF (?)... Resurfacing for me was a miracle... it gave me better life than I ever even hoped to get... at the time when I had not much hope. It gave me more than that... it gave me friends... Lynn Beyler, Alan, Susan Joyfull...Marji from Germany, Helen from England... Michael from San Jose. I am a mother of four children and grandmother to eight.  I always loved having my family near and celebrating the holidays, birthdays and summers with family members around.  My husband and I would travel to Orlando, Florida in the winter so that they family could join us there to visit Disney World.  My arthritis became so bad that I could not join in the fun and was always looking for some place to sit.  We used to travel out west and hike the canyons of Utah and Colorado and that had to come to a stop.  My life was put on hold and I was only 56 years old.  Before my hips gave out on me, I felt like I was 39 years old.  I am a great lover of gardening and that was impossible because I could not stand or bend for any length of time.

I'm a Surface Hippy Now!

I was twelve years old when I first learned that I had hip problems. I’m now coming around the corner on thirty-two. That’s twenty years of pain and restrictions. A twenty year long chapter of life that is finally coming to an end!

At age twelve I took a fall on my left hip. I had no pain, but a few days later I found out that I couldn’t get up into a run. Three months of doctors visits finally led to a diagnosis of a Slipped Epiphysis. The growth plate on top of my left femoral head was sliding off. Surgery was scheduled to pin it up, and one year later I had surgery to remove the pins.

I entered Apollo Specialty Hospital on 3-12, a day before surgery. They ran a series of tests, EKG, blood, urine analysis, etc. I spoke briefly with Dr. Bose and some of the other doctors who are part of the team.

At age 42 I have severe osteoarthritis in both hips, with cysts and osteophytes (bone spurs).  I've become increasingly disabled, and less flexible with almost zero range of motion, and have had ever-increasing pain since I was 20 years old. Symptoms appeared during my first pregnancy at age 20, although I never thought it was anything to be concerned about and would not find out for another 14 years that the pain and disability were due to severe degenerative changes from osteoarthritis.  I just found out now, at my consultation with the surgeon I chose, that my OA was caused by congenital hip dysplasia.
I was told a few years ago (at age 34) that I would need both hips replaced.

I returned to the USA in August, 2007, after a 27 month Peace Corps assignment in the rain forest on a mountaintop in Honduras. My little village had rough, rocky roads, and with an aching hip, it was sometimes quite a struggle to hike the half mile uphill to my house. On three different occasions, I fell and cut my knees. My hip was getting worse but I said nothing to the Peace Corps Medical Unit. You were sent home permanently and your service as a volunteer was abruptly ended if you had a problem like a hip that required surgery. I loved my time in Honduras, the people, the orchids, butterflies and the opportunity to spend 2+ years away from the fast pace of the USA. So I put up with the pain. I would admit it at the end of my service.

In early 1999 I was 50 years old, my right hip was giving me trouble (limping, pain after walking about half a mile) and I had never heard of hip resurfacing.

A few years previously, I had seen my General Practitioner with the intention of getting a hip replacement. I recognised the signs – my father had spent most of his fifties in pain. Then, when he was 56, he had both hips replaced and was a changed man – country walks and no pain. My plan was to get it done early and make the most of my fifties. Wrong!

My Story

When I was 12 I encountered Osteomylitis. This is a nasty infection of the bone marrow. It first occurred in the upper left hip but over the next 6 yrs occurred in both wrists and migrated to occur in the muscles of both hips, my back and finally settled into the bone of my left pelvis beside my hip joint. In the end the OS fused the hip joint in an effort to stop the osteomylitis being a problem.

The osteomylitis infections stopped but left me with no left hip. That means that one cannot sit in a chair normally, cars are difficult to get into and out of, small spaces such as aero plane seats are a nightmare etc. Constant pressure is then put on the spine and knees to work to replace the hip joint.

The care and facility were great.  After only a day, I went back to the Villa, and stayed there just 6 more days and flew back to the States.  I was on minimal pain pills.

I am so glad to have come across your page. I am a 33 yr old female who had Juvenile Rheumatoid arthritis and the damage in my hips left me without any cartilage in my right hip and very little in the left. I have been to many doctors hoping for a better alternative and solution than replacing the hip and I get the same answer over and over. I will need a THR. I put it off for years now and I am always looking on the internet for some answers but when I woke up today barely able to walk I got back on the net and searched myspace and found your page. I am going to take a look into this and hope that it is something that is possible for me. I am only 33 and I would like to have somewhat of a normal life and able to do normal everyday things without pain. I could never cross my legs that is something i just learned to accept as thing i can not do. Thank you. BTW 50 yrs old I would never believe it. You look my age for real.

JulI cannot believe this is really happening.
I have been in pain since 2004 and the last 3 and a half years the pain has been seriously debilitating. When it started getting pretty bad in '06, I had excellent medical coverage through my work. I got tons of MRI's and the results were, my doctor said,  "a little liquid in the hip, some slight degeneration that’s completely normal. This is certainly not the cause of your pain."  I took her word for it and tried to find the source of the pain by using any alternative I could. Acupuncture, Chiropractor, yoga, etc. I was under the impression it was my psoas muscle so one treatment even scraped my stomach so hard to smooth out the psoas that I was black and blue.  The next treatment scraped right over the bruises. This was very painful but I would try anything to get out of the pain.

In Kaibree's own words:

As far as I can tell, I was a perfectly normal pre-teen. I loved hanging out with my friends, playing sports and bugging my older brother. Needless to say, I never expected anything like this to happen to me.

My story begins in November 2005 when I was thirteen years old. For quite a few months I had been complaining of stiff hips at dance class; my mother advised me to stretch more. Then one day, only a month after my thirteenth birthday, I was playing in a volleyball game and felt a sudden pain in my hip which I had never felt before. Concerned, my mom took me to my family doctor. They took several x-rays, and my doctor was shocked by the results. It was obvious my hips weren’t completely normal, that there was something different about them.

I was 47 when I had my hip resurfaced in June 2007. Before resurfacing came along, I had been told by an orthopedic surgeon that I would be a candidate for replacement "someday." I had decided to hold out as long as I could for something else to come along, knowing that replacements would last only 20 years, and longevity runs on both sides of my family. I also knew that there were amazing medical advancements coming along faster and faster.

I had a minor sports injury to my left hip back in high school, probably resulting in some mild cartilage damage. But, the normal wear and tear caused the cartilage to wear down much faster, and starting in 2001 I started having a lot of trouble. I had developed a pretty good limp due to decreasing loss of mobility in that hip joint. Then, luckily in the spring of 2006 I saw a story on my local news about this "new alternative" to hip replacement — resurfacing.

Hi all

Some of you may remember my posts from a few years ago, I had my left hip
resurfaced in 1991 by the wonderful Mr McMinn. I had a check up at the ROH in
B'ham earlier this month (I have them every 2 years) and it all still looks
great.

My 17 & 12 year old boys are still not suffering any ill affects from metal ions
during pregancy so I think it's fair to say that made no difference.

I will post again on my left hips 20th birthday in September :-)

Take care

I am still strutting around in 4 inch heels without pain so all is good!!

Hi Vicky,

Dr. Clarke asked me to contact you with my story of hip resurfacing. Here goes.

I had my left hip resurfaced by Dr. Clarke on April 30, 2008 using the Birmingham hip. Prior to that I had been in physical and aqua therapy for nearly a year, attempting to retain range of motion and strength. My recovery after surgery was very quick. I walked without a cane in less than 3 weeks, and mowed my lawn with a self-propelled walking mower at 3 weeks. All the time I was diligent about my exercise program from my PT. The progress was amazing with noticeable improvement from one day to the next. In a month I was able to walk around my neighborhood (a little over a mile), something I had not been able to do in a couple of years.

I had problems with what I thought was my lower back for years. Started in my early 40's. I then started noticing that my leg would feel like it was going to give out as I went down stairs or got up from a chair. The pain became more noticeable at night after a busy day. I saw my Dr., had x-rays and while there was some evidence of OA in my back, not to the extent that I should be in the amount of pain I was. I was given Naproxen and started seeing a chiro periodically, in the interim the pain got worse.

I was diagnosed six years ago with osteoarthritis in both hips and within the last few months, the pain has become unbearable. Originally, my os prescribed "Synvisc" injections but my health insurer denied the request - even on two appeals. I told the doc I would pay out of pocket but he said my hips are shot and that I wouldn't get much relief and to just get the surgery. He talked about THR - he didn't even discuss resurfacing. Just said, "give me a month notice," and sent me on my way as I began to cry. I am 51 with an almost 12-year old son and I feel, after researching on the Net, that resurfacing may be better option, esp. since I will need bilateral."

I don't know what to say, other than 13 1/2 years later I am still pain free, with no problems. I rarely think about my surface replacement. I only occasionally wonder if the device will last my lifetime. Amstutz certainly sees no reason why it shouldn't last my lifetime.

I just had an LBHR with Dr. Ure just 9 days ago in Mt. Shasta California. I am now recovering at home and trying to work from home at the same time.

I am a 46 year old male and moderately athletic. I was aware of symptoms of my osteoarth. of the left hip for just over a year prior to my operation but the symptoms were quickly getting worse. I had a sort of normal gait at the end which turned into a limp with about a couple hundred yards of walking. I had been aware of hip resurfacing for a number of months and have been helped by Vicki and Alan in choosing a doctor for the operation.

I was a gymnast in college and had on and off pain since then. After the arthroscopic surgery at the HSS I diligently worked to get the range of motion and seemed to progress but never became pain free. I had right foot issues and got orthotics to correct that problem and since then I deteriorated and became bone on bone.

Dr. Gross performed my surgery (metal on metal hip resurfacing / replacement utilizing the Cormet 2000 by Corin) on Jan. 17, 2002.

I am a 49 year old male, employed as an airfreight expediter. Considerable amounts of physical activity are required. My social activities and hobbies all revolve around the outdoor life, construction and movement. I’ve spent 9 years building a cabin / retreat in the Superior National Forest on a 40 acre parcel we own. The restrictions imposed by a standard total hip replacement (THR), max weight and movement, could have made completion of this project impossible. All materials are transported along logging roads and then carried to site, over ridges and bogs. Our dream has been to retire to this retreat.

tSurgery August 25, 2008 RBHR with Dr. Hayato Mori in Honolulu, Hawaii

Sometimes the ache would also be in my right hip area where occasional twinges would bring me to a stop on my daily walks with my dogs, getting shorter as time passed.

Vicky Marlow’s Story 12/01/05 Dr. Bose ***VIDEO*** PDF Print E-mail

About ten years ago my Mom had her first hip replaced, a year later she had her second. The THR’s (Total Hip Replacements) that she received then were the old poly on metal small head devices. She was told they would last her 8 -12 years before she would need revision surgery. During this time she was in her early 60’s. Since then she has never been able to cross her legs or stoop down low to get something out of a kitchen cabinet. Due to her THR’s she is unable to lift her grandchildren or even get down on the ground to play with them.

My story begins way back in my early childhood.  I had congenital left hip dysplasia that resulted in me not being able to walk as a toddler.  At age 18 months, I underwent a surgery whereby a piece of my pelvis bone was wedged into my hip socket in an attempt to build it up.  The surgery was somewhat successful, but it did not entirely resolve the dysplasia.  So at age 5, I underwent another surgery whereby a femoral osteotomy was performed and the head of the femur was rotated and turned in towards the socket.  I spent two months in a body cast, rolling around on a mechanic's cart, but the surgery was successful.
