3/27/09 Dr. Edwin Su

DAST International has selected it’s fourth candidate to receive financial assistance with hip resurfacing surgery with Dr. Edwin Su at the Hospital for Special Surgery.  27 year old Adil Mjadli from Orlando Florida is scheduled for surgery on March 27, 2009.

Adil My name is Adil Mjadli, I was born and raised in north Africa Morocco, I moved to Orlando, Florida 6 years ago and I have been living here since.  About 5 years ago I started experiencing some pain in my very low back to my left hip. It gets worst when the weather changes, when I walk for long distances, or do any sport activity.

I visited a couple of doctors but none of them could figure out what exactly was wrong. I followed massage therapy treatment for a couple of months.  I did acupuncture but none of those things relieved my pain.  As the time passes the pain gets worst and worst, in March 2008 I become totally not able to work, and every simple move causes me a sharp pain in my hip and since I don't have insurance, I couldn’t afford to visit a hospital or a doctor.  I carried the pain and the disability for about 3 months hoping every day to get better and start a job that provided insurance but that day never came.  The pain is still the same and the mobility of my hip joint is just decreasing which effects negatively my whole body and the basic daily moves became a hard and painful task, from sleeping to using bathroom to even sitting on a chair.

One day on July 08 I decided to go to the ER, they took CT scan and blood tests then they referred me to an orthopedic, who told me that I need a THR and he added that is the only option I have to be able to walk again,  For me that’s the first time in my life I hear such THR but I was not convinced with the whole idea of surgery period, remember I'm only 27 years old.  So I told myself it must be a way out there that I have to find out. I started searching,  reading about arthritics then I came up with this plan, all I need to get well and back to normal life is take supplement vitamin D/calcium and chiropractic treatment.  I did that for about 2 months and the result nothing.  Then I read somewhere about steroid hip injection so I took it and the result still nothing.

AdilI kept searching till one day I found out about resurfacing hip which made me kind of open for a surgery.  The problem now is, how and where to get it.  Remember I don't have insurance and I haven't worked for a long time.  After some research and tries I ended up with a program that can provide me with no cost surgery,  I went to their doctor who was not helpful as I expected a doctor to be, he didn't say much but I kept asking him questions and one of them was HAVE YOU DONE RESURFACING  BEFORE,  he said NO BUT I HAVE DONE MANY THRs, then my worries started, hesitation began and a million WHAT IF QUESTIONS  came up to my mind. after one week I had to see him for the pre surgery checks , when he wants me to sign for TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT INSTEAD OF RESURFACING at that point I was convinced million percent that I'm not with the right surgeon, by that time I found out about surfacing hippy group where I found the best support and answers.

I received tens of emails says that I shouldn't go with this surgeon so I did so and I posted my situation (no insurance and I cant afford the cost but I need  resurfacing) and before I know, I received tens emails and most of them referred to me DAST ORGANISATION, I submitted my application and I got in contact with  Vicky ( she is an angel) she offered me an endless help and she felt exactly what I'm going through (god bless her).  I got qualified for the resurfacing from Dr SU and thanks to DAST I'm going to have the surgery for no COST.  Today 03/10  I received a phone call from Dr Su personally, he took his time to explain and answer every question I have, he is not only an experienced surgeon but he is also a very nice person. and there I'm now waiting for the second call from Dr Su to arrange the exact date for the surgery. I'm in pain now but my excitement is taking over the pain:) I cant wait to get my life back, I'm really excited.  SPECIAL thanks to Vicky Marlow, Dr Edwin Su, all DAST members.
I will be posting my surgery and my recovery steps as it goes.

Update April 9, 2009

When I arrived at New York I was, I didn't know what to expect. But as soon as I started meeting the doctors and the nurses, I knew I was in the best hands ever. HSS is an excellent hospital the facilities are great, but most of all the staff. I couldn't have asked for anything better, Thank you so much to every single person that helped me pre and post surgery.

Dr.Su was the most caring doctor I have ever met as well as Dr. AISER. They treated me with all the care and compassion possible and not like another case or another patient. They took the time to talk to me and explain everything, they checked on me periodically even on their days off! As much as they are  great doctors they are and even better people.

As soon as I came out of the OR, I felt no pain! I couldn't believe it, NO PAIN, I didn’t even remember what that felt like. My recovery went really smooth, almost no pain, and the physical therapy really helped me get moving. Thank you to the nurses and doctors for taking such good care of me. I am now almost 2 weeks post OP and I'm doing so good, I feel great, my recovery is going just as planned (and maybe even better). I'm beginning my new life and cant wait to do more and more. It’s a miracle this happened and I am living proof that miracles do happen, thank you so much to Dr. Su, Dr. AISER, Vicky, and all the staff at HSS!!

Update April 27, 2009

It has been now one month since i had my left hip resurfaced with Dr. Su and im pain free. before my surgery everyone told me that im in the best hands and i ll be pain free after the surgery but i never thought that it would be this great.  I am amazed with the result. I'm not only pain free but also my operated hip mobility is better than it was 4 years ago. i could of walked without crutches 2weeks after the surgery but Dr. SU recommended me to go easy on my recovery because i was diagnosed with AS(ANKYLOSING SPONDYLISTS) So now im still using one crutch.
I can not afford a physical therapy so i do it myself and there is what i have been doing:
-Spend atleast 45mints at the pool every day.
-Bicycling at the gym 3 times a week and i always stop before i get tired.
-try to walk everyday as much as i can (of course with crutchses and now with only one crutch)
 - do the basic post op exercises whenever i can.

There are some daily activities that i could NOT do for a year before the surgery but i can do now, even it is ONLY a month after my surgery.
 -Showering with no help.
-Putting my pants on with no help.
-Sitting  on a regular toilet sit.
 -cook my meals.
-sit on a chair as long as i want.
 -drive.
 -swim.
 - bicycling at the gym.
-sleep on my right side (not the operated one)
-walk with crutches for longer distance.

There is only one small problem, im not used to a pain free life yet so whenever i wake up in the morning with no pain i think im just dreaming:)

I Hope the best luck and better life for all the post-op hippies and i strongly encourage the pre-op hippies to not wait any longer.

MY thanks, to Vicky, Dr. Su, Dr.AIZER, HOSPITAL FOR SPECIAL SURGERY (NYC), DAST ORGANIZATION and their staff, and surfacehippy group.
